4 Great Day Trips from Fongrave

The Lot-et-Garonne and surrounding areas offer great opportunities for day trips. We do have public transportation options for some of these, but we recommend a car nevertheless, as you will need it to get to the train and bus stations.

Cahors

The first trip we recommend is a trip to the historic roman city of Cahors, 85km (50miles) further along the River Lot. The pilgrimage to the Santiago de Compostela passes through the city and it is the birthplace of Pope John XXII. Its medieval quarter, barbican, roman walls and historic monuments make it a great place to visit and see the Valentré Bridge, Cathédrale Saint Étienne and the Daurade quarter.

Montauban

Montauban is the second oldest of the bastides of of southern France founded in 1144. It is 90km (55miles) from Fongrave. It is an open-air museum, with street art and sculptures throughout the city. Stroll through the streets discovering the art, private mansions, the Place Nationale, the Ingres Bourdelle museum, or the Saint-Jacques church and the cathedral, and the magnificent view of the city from the Vieux bridge. Its marina “Port Canal”, offers dinner cruises and tours.

Bordeaux

Bordeaux is 130km (80miles) from Fongrave, accessible by train from Tonneins or Agen. World capital of wine with its prestigious Bordeaux castles and vineyards, the city is considered a centre of gastronomy and fine dining and is the largest UNESCO protected city in the world.

Bergerac

Bergerac is 63km (40miles) from Fongrave. The city offers cruises aboard traditional boats down the river Dordogne, walks through the historic streets and is the home of Cyrano de Bergerac. The region is renowned for its wines and good food and you can take guided walks along the river, visit the digital and tobacco museums.
